Ramadan
- thanks to one of our Yellow Flag committee members for writing this piece about Ramadan
"Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the month where Muslims fast from the dawn to dusk and they do not eat or drink. They are permitted to break the Ramadan when the sun sets and they are allowed to eat until 3am. Some of them stay awake until 3am and eat. Others go to sleep up to 2.30am then they wake up and eat again to keep them going for the rest of the day. Most Muslims spend their time in the mosque praying or reading the Quran. If someone is really sick they can break the Ramadan and they can retake it another day in the year that suits them. Muslim children have to be 14 years old to do Ramadan.
Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, then we have Eid. In the last ten days Quran is given to Muhammad [pbuh]. Muslims celebrate Eid by visiting each other and eating lunch together and saying "Eid Mubarack" (Happy Eid)
This year Ramadan started on June 6th and it will end the 5th or 6th of July."

Visit from Charlotta, a teacher from Finland
Today we had a visit from Charlotta, a principal in a school from a town called Raseborg, in Finland. Her school is a primary school for children aged from 7 - 12 years old and has around 60 pupils. Charlotta told us about her school; about their afterschool clubs, how they are a Green School like us, and also about the eTwinning her school does with schools in other countries including Poland and Ukraine. In Finland all schools are run by the State and religion is taught outside of school hours.
Finland doesn't have the same amount of diversity as Ireland, but there are some people there from other countries and sadly, like anywhere, racism can and sometimes does happen. They don't have the Yellow Flag programme, so some schools are coming together to implement a similar sort of programme there. As part of their work Charlotta and another teacher from the area decided to visit Ireland especially to meet some Yellow Flag schools and learn about our work.
It was a great opportunity for the diversity committee representatives to learn about a school in another country as well as to talk about their work and we really enjoyed meeting Charlotta!
You can visit the website for Charlotta's school by going to www.edu.raseborg.fi/billnasskola and you can learn more about Raseborg by visiting www.en.raseborg.fi

Flag raising ceremony review
Our flag raising was held on Friday the 3rd of June. The sun shone and it was a great day!
We were delighted to welcome back past pupils who had previously worked on the diversity committee and also parents and other members of the community.
Our school choir sang for the crowd and the 3rd class students who have been taking violin lessons also played for everyone. Abiator and Rebecca played for everyone too, just as they did at the awards ceremony. The class representatives read out a recap on everything we have done so far before the flag was raised to a round of applause.
Thank you to everyone who donated food for our intercultural food celebration - the tables were groaning under the weight of it all and the children really loved sampling the various sweet and savoury foods on offer!
Thank you also to all the parents and visitors who came to celebrate with us, we hope you also enjoyed a hot drink and something tasty!
Our work continues and if you are interested in getting involved take a look at the "What Comes Next?" information pamphlet on the Publications page linked above

INTO In Touch magazine coverage
In Touch magazine is produced for teachers by the INTO. This month's issue includes coverage of the awards ceremony and along with the article is a great picture of St. Ronan's student Abiator with some students from other schools and Bressie. Abiator played music for the assembled crowd on the day of the awards and was a great representative for St. Ronan's.

We have sent letters home to all families inviting them all to our flag raising and intercultural food festival.
Please note:
Some invitations may have said our day will be June 8th. This date was changed to June 3rd to avoid clashing with Ramadan so that our Muslim school friends and their families can enjoy the food festival with us.

Irish Times coverage of the awards ceremony
The Irish Times has coverage today of the Yellow Flag awards ceremony, featuring a beautiful photograph of some members of our committee!
More than a dozen primary and secondary schools have received national recognition for their work in tackling racism and creating a more welcoming environments for minorities.
Under the yellow flag programme, schools volunteer to undertake ways to celebrate diversity, inclusion and difference within the school and the wider community.
At an event in Dublin’s Liberty Hall on Tuesday, 13 schools were awarded yellow flags for activities which ranged from a school trip to a local direct provision centre for asylum seekers, to a cultural cookery day for students and parents.
Ombudsman for Children Niall Muldoon said the programme was helping to change attitudes towards minorities in a positive way.
“Instead of asking people to stop being discriminatory or stop being racist, this programme is asking them to promote diversity and integration,” he said.
“These schools are showing great foresight by t helping to create a new sense of openness and, if we sustain it, we can really become a country of a thousand welcomes. We’ve been relatively slow in doing that, but these schools are showing the huge richness associated with diversity.”
Despite the work being done by individual schools, surveys indicate that significant challenges remain.
A survey of more than 1,500 students in the schools awarded yellow flag status at Tuesday’s event showed that three out of ten reported experiencing racism in the pat year.
The same poll found eight out of ten would like their school to provide time to celebrate different cultures, languages, religions and identities.
The yellow flag programme, developed by the the Irish Traveller Movement, is aimed at creating cross-cultural understanding among the estimated 200 nationalities and cultures in the school population and broader community.
In the past seven years, the programme has more than 21,000 young people in 60 schools with students from over 83 different nationalities and cultures.
Paula Madden, the co-ordinator of the programme, said work to foster greater understanding of diversity was crucially important given the challenges posed by Europe’s refugee crisis.
“it’s more important than ever for children to see diversity normalised and that young people learn to relate to each other across cultural, religious and ethnic identities,” she said.
St John’s National School, one of the 13 schools recognised at Tuesday’s event, was hailed for its work both inside and outside the school.
Students helped organise a visit to the Mosney direct provision centre, where some of the school children are residents.
Elizabeth Daniel, a pupil and resident of the direct provision centre, she and others thought it would be fun to invite their friends to her home.
“It was so exciting for me to have my friends come to visit for the first time,” she said.
“When the buses arrived I just ran over and hugged them. We did lots of fun things that day. We drew pictures. We played with the parachute, we played basketball, football and we even had a disco … I didn’t want the day to end because it was one of my favourite days ever.”

Awards ceremony report
Today, Tuesday April 26th we went to Liberty Hall where we received the Yellow Flag that we have been working towards since October 2013. We had been awarded the flag in the summer of 2015 but unfortunately the awards ceremony had had to be postponed, so we are delighted to finally have the flag!
There were schools from all over the country there, both primary and secondary level. We were all given the opportunity to speak on stage and answer questions about our school's work towards our Flag. Bressie, singer and coach on the Voice of Ireland, gave a very powerful speech on following our own path and being proud of who we are.
Abiator was invited by the Yellow Flag people to come too and perform at the ceremony. He was fantastic as always and we were very proud of him!
We got some great ideas for the future and we are still hard at work continuing to promote diversity and inclusion in our school and the wider community.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind all parents and guardians that their help is always appreciated and that anyone who wants to get on board will receive a warm welcome!
Flag raising will be held very shortly.

New banner for the school
As part of our work to spread our message of friendship the Yellow Flag committee commissioned a banner for the entrance to the school. Written on it is our school logo "All Smiles are Equal" and it contains the rainbow hands of friendship and friendly pictures of different children.
We hope all our staff, students and visitors like it and feel welcome when they come in the door and see it!

Birthday songs CD
- by Caoimhe
So far in the Yellow Flag we are getting people in our school to write out the song lyrics to "Happy Birthday" in their own language. We have loads of different languages including Polish, Nigerian and Chinese. We also have different songs people sing in their families to celebrate birthdays.
We are going to make a CD with all the songs from the different cultures in our school. We will include the lyrics for people to enjoy.

Chinese New Year is on February 19th. This year is the year of the sheep. Some of the families in our community celebrate Chinese New Year and it is very important to them.
Each class learned about Chinese New Year and some of the ways that people celebrate. Some children ate Chinese food, some children made Chinese lanterns with Lynette and some children learned a song called Gong Hey Fat Choi which means Happy New Year in Cantonese. We hope that our classmates who celebrate had a great New Year and wish them all happiness and prosperity for the coming year!

On the 14 th of March we celebrated St.Patrick's day in our school
We had St.Patrick's day in our school, we had lots of fun. It was a great success, lots of children participated, and parents came to watch the children perform. We dressed up in green, and the little kids got their face painted. We had a big parade afterwards. The parents got tea and coffee, they were satisfied. Altogether it was a lovely day, luckily didn't rain :) We all enjoyed it a lot.
Our intercultural calendar for 2014
The Yellow Flag committee has launched a calendar for 2014. We have included important days from all the various faiths and cultures in our school community and each month the picture is a photograph of the students who have their birthday that month.
Calendars will be on sale through the office or Ms. Young and are priced at €4.00 each or 3 for €10.00.
We think they would make a great gift for grandparents and other family members and we hope you will enjoy them!
